VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins are larger and often protrude from the skin. They tend to appear on the calf, the back of the leg or inside the thigh. Varicose veins can cause discomfort like leg swelling, heaviness, itching and burning during the day. They usually look like lumps, bumps or ropey nodules underneath your skin. Depending on its size and where it’s located, a varicose vein can also have a blue-green appearance.
SYMPTOMS
Varicose veins usually appear to be:
- Deeper
- Bulging
- Larger
- Twisting
- Purplish or bluish
There can be a genetic tendency toward weak vein valves and hormones also play a part, accounting for the increased incidence in women. Puberty, pregnancy and menopause, as well as taking estrogen, progesterone and birth control pills can weaken vein valves and change leg circulation.
CAUSES
Normal valves allow blood to flow in only one direction towards the heart. Faulty valves allow blood to flow backward into the leg, increasing pressure in the veins. This increased pressure dilates and elongates the vein, causing it to protrude and appear curved or twisted.
SPIDER VEINS
Spider veins are closer to the surface of the skin and look more like thin spider webs. Some spider veins are acosmetic concern. In other cases, spider veins cause uncomfortable symptoms like burning, itching and cramping. Spider veins are more wispy and smaller than varicose veins, almost like little blue hairs on the skin’s surface.
Spider veins typically appear:
- small and faint
- flush with the skin
- Reddish
- in branches or webs
They’re often found on the face or legs and are typically painless. Sun exposure can make spider veins worse by breaking down collagen under the skin. Spider veins are usually inherited. Weight gain, female hormones and prolonged sitting or standing are also contributing factors.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
There are a couple of different treatment options for spider veins and varicose veins. The treatment options for varicose veins are phlebectomies, vein ablation, and sclerotherapy. Possible treatment options for spider veins include spider vein sclerotherapy or microsclerosis using thermocoagulation. At BlueRock Medical we offer a free vein screening with our trained ultrasound tech. Check the condition of your veins and learn your options at BlueRock Medical.
