A Dexa scan can measure you bone density or body composition. Let’s explore some the interesting features!

  • D E X A stands for “dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.”
  • DEXA scans are very safe. They use a much lower level of radiation than standard X-rays.
  • Research shows women start losing bone mass earlier and faster than men. Because the level of estrogen declines after the menopause, resulting in a decrease in bone density. That’s why we encourage women to get a bone density scan!
  • Your healthcare provider may recommend DEXA if you have osteoporosis, fractures, smoking, bone health over a period of time, monitor your response to a treatment, and evaluate body composition.
  • You can eat, drink, and take medication normally before a bone density DEXA scan.
  • Unlike x-ray machines, DEXA machines are checked daily for their ability to measure bone mineral accurately
  • No two DEXA machines are exactly alike. If you have to get a second test it’s best to use the same machine.
  • The machine sends a thin, invisible beam of low-dose x-rays with two distinct energy peaks through the bones. One peak is absorbed mainly by soft tissue and the other by bone.
  • Radiation exposure from DEXA is comparable to being in the sun for 2-3 hours.
  • DEXA Body Mass Composition scans tell a more accurate story than the BMI scale alone.
  • The DEXA test can detect a weakened bone before an incident occurs especially in older adults.
  • DEXA can measure the water both inside and outside your cells.
