Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
BPH is a complex disease that causes enlargement of the smooth muscle and lining of the prostate gland to increase in size. Schedule an appointment at Blue Rock Medical to learn more about BPH.
What causes BPH?
The cause of BPH has not been completely discovered. Many factors have been identified that influence BPH including hormones and age related factors.
Does BPH increase my risk of cancer?
There is research that loosely links BPH to both prostate and bladder cancers but the overall increased risk is unknown and the link is controversial.
Who gets BPH?
This condition typically affects men over 40 years of age. By the time men are 60, about half of men will have BPH. By the time men are 80 years old more than 90% will have at least some prostate enlargement.
Can I (or could I have) prevent BPH?
No identified factors have been found to significantly decrease risk of BPH except for patients who have had their testicles removed for other reasons. Heart disease, obesity, and diabetes have been linked to BPH but not definitively. Family History of BPH is also a risk factor for early BPH.
