Inferior Vena Cava filters are placed in the large vein that drains the legs and brings blood back to the heart in order to stop blood clots in the legs from traveling to the heart and lungs, sometimes before an operation. These filters can increase risk of blood clots forming over time and they can often be safely removed to decrease this risk. The filters are placed and removed through small needle punctures in the veins of the neck or groin. This procedure is performed under conscious sedation with constant monitoring by a nurse and every procedure is performed by a board certified physician.
