Angiography is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in the arteries, veins and the heart chambers. This is traditionally done by injecting a radiopaque contrast agent into the blood vessel and imaging using X-ray based techniques such as fluoroscopy.

Types of Angiography

An arteriogram is a procedure that produces an image of your arteries. During the procedure, your doctor will use contrast material, or dye, and X-rays to observe the flow of blood through your arteries and note any blockages.

Vein ablation is a minimally-invasive, outpatient alternative treatment to vein stripping for varicose veins. The procedure is performed by injecting a local anesthetic around the vein, and then inserting a thin catheter. A laser is applied to the inside of the vein, which cauterizes and closes the diseased vein. After the diseased vein has been closed, other healthy veins take over to carry blood from the leg, re-establishing normal, healthy blood flow back to the heart.
