“Sunlight is essential for human health and well-being”

Medical News Today

Sunlight increases Vitamin D

One benefit of the sun is vitamin D! Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin. When the sun hits your skin it changes one of your chemicals in your skin (cholesterol) to vitamin D3.

Vitamin D is hard to get with only food alone (without supplements), and the best way to receive it is through the sun!

Vitamin D has many purposes in your body, and is essential! You can learn more about Vitamin D in the video below.

Sunlight Reduces Depression

The sun can make you HAPPY!

Exposure to UVB rays helps your skin produce the hormone serotonin. This chemical increases your mood.

With a higher level of serotonin you will feel relaxed, calm, alert, and focused.

Sunlight Benefits Bone Health

Sunlight benefits our bone health! Bones protect our heart, brain, and other organs. We need to protect them! Calcium and phosphorus help keep our bones strong. You can eat calcium rich food, or go out in the sun!

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which improves your bone health!

Be careful about getting too much calcium though!

Sunlight Creates Better Sleep

Melatonin (hormone that helps you sleep) is regulated when you spend more time outside. Your body will naturally produce more melatonin when the sun goes down, and less when the sun is up.

This means the more time you spend outside, the better you will sleep!

Sunlight Boosts Your Immune System

Sunlight Benefits your immune system! Your immune system defends your body against viruses and bacteria.

The sunlight gives you vitamin D, which improves your immune cells production, and white blood cells. When your body doesn’t have vitamin D, it slows down the growth and you become susceptible to getting sick.
